The Urban Land Institute is pleased to introduce the ULI Apgar Thought Leader Award, supported by Julia Morgan Society member and ULI Trustee Mahlon “Sandy” Apgar. This biennial award offers ULI members an opportunity to pursue research and writing with the goal of publishing in Urban Land magazine online and/or in print.
The award will encourage thought leadership and clarity of thought on subjects that exemplify, reflect, and champion best practices in responsible land use and which reinforce the mission of ULI in cities and communities worldwide. The award will give preference to authors who are not professional writers or prominent authorities in their fields to encourage young practitioners and emerging experts.
The awardee will write a professional-quality, thoroughly researched and documented article for the audience of Urban Land. The subject of the article may relate to research they are already pursuing, and they may receive additional funding from other sources. The awardee will receive a $1,500 honorarium to support study of their proposed area of inquiry, and the awardee also will receive free registration to either ULI Spring Meeting or ULI Fall Meeting in 2021.
ULI will select awardees based on the extent to which their application and proposed work demonstrates the likelihood their writing will meet the following criteria:
a) Innovative ideas about buildings and communities;
b) Relevance to current land use and development issues;
c) Logic and perceptiveness of the analysis;
d) Clarity of presentation;
e) Overall contribution to land use and development literature; and
f) Additional criteria as designated by the selection committee (e.g. specific topics, emphases, geography, etc.).
